Update on Proposed Changes to Australian Citizenship Requirements: In 2017, the Australian Government announced its intention to amend the eligibility requirements for Australian citizenship. This included increasing the amount of time that a person must be living in Australia as a permanent resident prior to being eligible for Australian citizenship. One proposed bill, the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 was effectively defeated in October 2017. Senator Pauline Hanson introduced a new bill in February 2018. This bill has now been referred to a Senate Committee for review. A report from the Senate Committee is due on 4 December 2018.
